Medigap Policies are Standardized

  • Every Medigap policy must follow federal and state laws designed to protect you, and it must be clearly identified as "Medicare Supplement Insurance." Insurance companies can sell you only a "standardized" policy identified in most states by letters.

  • All policies offer the same basic benefits but some offer additional benefits, so you can choose which one meets your needs.

  • Open-enrollment Period – The best time to buy a Medicare supplement insurance policy is during the open enrollment period which starts at 64 1/2 years of age or within six months before or after his/her effective date for Medicare Part B or covered under Medicare Part B prior to age 65 and now turning 65 (IEP2/SEP) (No Medical Questions)

  • During the six-month open-enrollment period, an insurance company cannot deny you Medicare supplement insurance coverage or increase the premium for a policy because of past or present health problems.
